What is Hair Transplant Surgery

According to a 2019 study, it was found that men who suffer from hair loss have lower self-esteem, decreased confidence and a lower quality of life, particularly affecting self-perception and interpersonal relationships.

A full head of hair will not only make you feel better about yourself but also improves the quality of your relationships and how you perceive yourself in the world.

If you are considering hair transplant surgery to help get your confidence back and reside in the Melbourne area, please contact us should you require further information or would like to book an appointment.

What Is a Hair Transplantation Procedure and How Can Melbourne Patients Benefit?

Our range of hair restoration procedures are used to treat several types of hair loss conditions. Our most popular procedure, the FUE hair transplant involves moving hair-bearing follicles (grafts) from the back or sides of the head, referred to as the donor area. These grafts are then planted into the balding areas, usually along the hairline, temples, top of the scalp, or at the crown of the head.

Patients can enjoy increased hair density that looks and feels natural.

What Treatment To Choose

At The Crown Clinic, we specialise in hair transplant surgery, using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method. We recommend this due to its many benefits.

The benefits of this hair transplant surgery over others includes:

  • Less scarring
  • Faster healing time
  • Safe and effective
  • Permanent results
  • Minimally invasive
  • Virtually painless
  • Natural looking results
  • Affordable

Things You Need to Know
Before Undergoing FUE Hair Transplant

How the Surgery Works

It is important to understand what is required during this process to ensure the best results and recovery.

For 3 days prior to your procedure, we recommend you refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, avoid drinking alcohol and over-exposure to the sun.

It is also advisable to stop smoking.

On the day of surgery

This is a day procedure performed with a local anaesthetic where the “grafts” are harvested from the donor area at the back of the head one by one – no stitches required. Each graft naturally occurs with one, two or three hair follicles which are then prepared and transplanted to the thinning or balding area. The new hairs are implanted individually and at the correct angle to mimic the direction of your own hair.

Post Surgery

For the first couple of nights after surgery, you will be required to sleep with your head elevated on several pillows or in a recliner chair. This will help reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous physical activity during the first week to prevent elevated blood pressure. No direct sun exposure, alcohol or smoking during the first two weeks as this will delay healing and damage the grafts.

We recommend a few days off of work to allow time to recover. Short term swelling can occur in some cases a few days after the procedure.

Recovery Time

Recovery time is minimal. There are no stitches involved, no follow up appointment is required – it takes around 12 days the tiny scabs to clear completely,

How to Maintain the Results

To maintain results it’s important to properly take care of the transplanted hair. Follow the post-op recommendations closely to ensure optimal healing takes place. Thereafter resume your normal haircare routine, and attend all follow-up appointments

New hair growth will start from the third to fourth month after surgery and will gradually fill in very naturally over the following months.  Full results are usually seen by 12 months post procedure.
